Get Healthy, Get Active

It’s January again and we all know what that means. It’s no longer the holidays and now we have to account for all of that holiday eating. Here are some of my tips for a great start to the new year:

  • Don’t get down on yourself.

  • Don’t make a resolution we all know that you won’t keep.

  • Don’t compare yourself to others.

  • Don’t hold yourself to impossible standards.

  • Do your best to make healthy choices but allow yourself to enjoy life.

  • Do fit in a physical activity that you love every day.

  • Do love your body for what it can do, not what it can’t.

  • Do hold yourself accountable.

There are no secrets or short cuts when it comes to fitness but it seems as though everyone is looking for a quick fix. I have some bad news for some of you… if you want to look good and be healthy you’re going to have to put down the fork and do the work. The good news is that you will live longer and enjoy your life a whole lot more. If you don’t use it, you lose it. You may not think going for a run will make a difference but talk to someone who can no longer walk and they will tell you differently. You don’t have to go to the gym. Find something else you love. Go dancing, climb a mountain, go snowshoeing, try something new.

Don’t listen to negative people who tell you that you can’t accomplish your goals, prove them wrong by showing up every day and doing your best. Your best is going to vary from day to day and that’s ok. The only person you have to answer to is yourself. Stop making excuses, make this the best year of your life. If you want to see changes, make them. Make them every day when you get up. Say to yourself, ” today I am going to be my best.” Thinking about health and fitness for a whole year is a daunting task but if you just commit to being your best one day at a time you might actually reach your goal. Remember that fitness is not judged by a scale but by how you feel and what you are able to do. A friend said to me, “The habits we form create our future.” What kind of future do you want?
